"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins." - Matthew 9:17
Remember when the music made you feel something. When it reached the soul with a message of love, hope and inspiration. The singers were full of passion; they were embodied with soul; and they were on a mission to soothe the human spirit. Welcome back to those days,"Where inspiration lives."
Music is one of the most creative tools given to us by God. It's main objective is to convey a message. A message that at times invokes feeling, emotion and inspiration in one way or another. Like many of the soul singers from times past, Ken Gober embodies that same passion and spirit with his understanding of the message.
Music has always been his first love. Ken has always been influenced by music. Following the footsteps of his father, a gospel singer, Ken grew up singing in church choirs and groups. "All I saw was my father going from church-to-church and studio sessions after another and I just thought that was the thing to do."
The singer/songwriter was born in Gary, Indiana, a city not necessarily heralded for the numerous talented recording artists that began their music careers in the steel city. While growing up in Gary was a challenge, music served as a constant and an inspiration throughout Ken's life. Ken's musical ability and talent was evident at an early age and helped to keep him away from some of the negative distractions of the streets.
While Christian values were definitely taught and instilled in Ken throughout his young life, like the prodigal son, he strayed away and became hooked on drugs and alcohol and at a young age, found himself in drug rehabilitation and at the bottom of his life, but through God's grace and mercy, Ken was able to turn his life around and pursue his music career.
Though the gospel scene became a proven ground for the young singer, the sound of R&B soul was another influence that he embraced. Listening to a variety of singers like Marvin Winans, Donny Hathaway, BeBe Winans, James Ingram, and Luther Vandross helped shape his musical style as well. With the gospel message of inspiration and the passion of soul music, Ken began his musical journey that would shape him into the artist he is today.
During the early 90's Ken moved to Atlanta, GA and joined a touring show band, "Exotique" as lead male vocalist. The band performed throughout the United States and internationally including China, Japan, France, Spain, Italy, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Along with live performances, Ken has appeared in three gospel stage plays and wrote and produced all music for Mack Productions stage play, "Rachel's Blues". Studio credits include background vocals for LaFace recording artist McArthur. He also recently produced an album for Philadelphia native and playwright, Donald Welch.
However, since leaving the band in 2005, Ken has finished his first project entitled "Soul of a Man: the Journey" (2008) and continues to inspire and uplift through his music.
"I am extremely blessed and I believe that those with the gift of music have a responsibility to use it to lift people out of the despair of life." With a fresh anointing and a new wine for the soul, God has truly birthed a special talent that will touch the hearts of God's people and proclaim His truth to the world.
